A Summary of the Types of Punches and Dies and Sharpening Considerations

We Sharpen Virtually All Dies for Your Punch Press
Dies
We sharpen virtually all flat punching dies up to 8 inches in diameter including Iron Worker, Single Station and Turret Punch Press tooling.
Pricing is determined by the measured diameter of the die (not the station size). Click Here for in depth Mail-in die sharpening prices | |
Flat Punches

Flat punches are the most common and we are able to sharpen punches for virtually all your punching equipment. Flat punches rarely present any problems as long as the punch has not been damaged beyond its specified grind life (length).
Prices start at $9.95 for Mail-In Service.

Rooftop Punches

Common in Turret and Single Station Punch Presses. May have the edge at the top of the rooftop flattened in some applications. The tool is returned to you in the same shape as sent to us unless otherwise requested.

Chisel Point Punch

This punch configuration is uncommon and normally only found on Whitney punches. The very sharp tool angle resembles a rooftop, however machining considerations cause this type of tool to be significantly more expensive to sharpen than a normal rooftop.
Notice: In some cases it is not possible to exactly duplicate the extremely sharp angles used on these tools. In most cases the reduction in the sharpness of the angle does not impair the ability of the tool to punch most metals. We will contact you before sharpening punches with an extremely sharp angle to make sure a reduction in the angle will work in your application.

Valley/Concave Punches

Valley and Concave punches with damage to the "valley" or "throat" of the punch require labor intensive re-work that usually causes the expense of service to approach or exceed the cost of a new punch.
For this reason we only offer "Touch Up" sharpening service on these punches.
As these punches are most often used for "nibbling" most of the wear occurs on the "flats" of the tool. The touch up service, which grinds just the flat surfaces of the punch will normally restore the tool to working condition.
Notice: Because only the flats are ground, the valley portion of the tool will diminish in size as the tool is sharpened in this manner, eventually causing the valley to disappear.

Chisel Punch with Center Point
Chisel Punch with Center Point
Chisel Punches with a Center Point are fairly uncommon and mostly seen in Iron Worker applications.
The labor intensive sharpening process causes the price of sharpening to approach or exceed the purchase price of a new tool so we recommend these tools not be sharpened.

Cross Shear Punch
